Young Australians to benefit from new UK visas
Posted on 02 December 2009

New visa opportunities

The British High Commission is delighted to announce that a new visa system for young Australians will start on 27th November.
From that date, the popular Working Holidaymaker Scheme will stop and the new Youth Mobility Scheme for those aged between 18 and 30 will start.

The Youth Mobility Scheme has added benefits for Australians:
For the first time, young Australians will have no restrictions on the amount of time they can spend working in the UK for the two year period
The visa application fee is being cut by 50% British High Commissioner to Australia, Helen Liddell, has welcomed the new scheme:
“This is great news for young Australians. Thousands already apply for working holidaymaker visas every year, and these changes make the UK even more attractive. Some of the old restrictions are going and the visas will be cheaper by half.
“Britain’s immigration system rewards those who come, work hard, bring their skills and strengthen cultural ties – and Australians fit the bill very well."

Like the existing working holidaymaker scheme, a Youth Mobility Scheme visa is valid for two years. The big difference is that Youth Mobility Scheme visas allow people to do almost any kind of work, and to spend as much of their time working as they like. For the first time, young people can also line up a full-time job in the UK before applying for a visa.

Under the new system, Australians will still be able to work in any field but if they wish to work as a professional sportsperson, set up in business or work as a Doctor in Training, they will need to qualify under Tier 1 or 2 of the Points Based System.

Among the new requirements, applicants for Youth Mobility Scheme visas will need to show they have the equivalent of £1600 (about A$3,900 at today’s exchange rate) to cover living expenses for the first few weeks in the UK.

The application fee for a Youth Mobility Scheme visa will be the equivalent of £99 compared with £205 for a Working Holidaymaker visa.
Download an information booklet (212KB pdf) giving more details about the Youth Mobility Scheme.

27th November is also the start date for the new Work Permit system known as Tier 2 Skilled Workers, part of the UK’s new Australian-style points-based system. People wanting to apply for Tier 2 visas need to be sponsored by an employer in the UK. They’ll also need to earn a certain amount of money or have a recognised qualification. (Tier 1 for highly-skilled migrants is already up-and-running and ancestry visas are unchanged.)

Full details of the new Tier 2 Skilled Workers and Tier 5 Temporary Workers and Youth Mobility Scheme will be announced in the coming weeks leading up to the start-date on 27th November. In the meantime, the High Commission in Canberra will continue to accept applications for working holidaymaker visas and work permit visas.  Applicants should however note that any applications for working holidaymaker visas received before the 27th November will be processed under the current Immigration Rules.

Those who already have a current working holidaymaker visa, or are about to get one before 27th November, will be able to stay in the UK according to the original terms of their visa.
