Ireland

If you are looking to work in Ireland as a Medial Practitioner, you will have to register with the Irish Medical Council before you are able to work.

Doctors http://www.medicalcouncil.ie/registration/default.asp

All doctors who wish to practise in the Republic of Ireland should be registered with the Medical Council. The Medical Practitioners Act, 2007, has been partially commenced under SI 231 of 2008. Further information will be provided when Part 6 of that Act is commenced later this year. Part 6 makes new provisions for registration of medical practitioners in Ireland. Under the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978, the Council currently maintains two registers, the General Register of Medical Practitioners and the Register of Medical Specialists.

General Register of Medical Practitioners

There are three types of registration within the General Register of Medical Practitioners which contained over 17,000 names in July 2005. These are:

  • Full Registration
This allows a doctor to practise independently in any health care setting without supervision.
  • Internship Registration
This allows a doctor to carry out internship training, as determined by the Medical Council, for one year in an approved hospital under consultant supervision. Doctors usually begin internship training immediately after graduation from medical school.
  • Temporary Registration
This allows non-EU doctors to be employed and to receive further training in the practice of medicine in a hospital, institution, clinic or general medical practice or in a prescribed health service setting approved of by the Council. Doctors applying for temporary registration are required to pass the Temporary Registration Assessment Scheme (TRAS) unless otherwise exempted.

Whether a doctor is entitled to apply for full, temporary or internship registration depends on a number of factors, but primarily their nationality and country of qualification.

Click here for guidance about temporary registration for "visiting EEA practitioners" (EU citizens with full registration in another EU member state) for the purposes of providing temporary or occasional services in the Republic of Ireland in accordance with the provisions of EU Directive 2005/36/EC.

Register of Medical Specialists

This is a voluntary register. Specialists appear within approved specialty divisions. Only doctors holding full registration with the Medical Council can apply for inclusion in the Register of Medical Specialists. Applications for entry to this register are processed by the Council's Registration Section.

Living and Working in Ireland

Although the Medical Council cannot provide information about living and working in Ireland, there are many informative websites about Ireland's culture, tax system, housing, citizenship, health service, etc, such as www.irlgov.ie or http://working.monster.ie or www.publicjobs.ie. Please note that the Medical Council cannot help in the processing of visa applications.
